BEP and NEP Workshop for Teachers underway at ATWS Dharamshala

ATWS Dharamshala, August 12, 2025: A 3-day workshop on the Basic Education Policy of the Central Tibetan Administration and the New Education Policy of India 2020 is currently underway at the Administrative Training and Welfare Society, Dharamshala, from August 12 to 14, 2025. ATWS is facilitating the workshop with venue and service facilities.

Organized by the Department of Education, CTA, the workshop aims to educate school educators on the core values and principles of the Basic Education Policy (BEP-2004) and the National Education Policy of India (NEP-2020), enabling them to integrate these policies into their daily classroom teachings through student-centered pedagogy and assessment strategies. Furthermore, the workshop also aims to promote shared understanding and dialogue among educators on key thematic areas such as ECCE, multilingualism, teacher quality, and 21st-century skills.

The Opening session commenced with a welcome address and introductory remarks by Additional Secretary, Mr. Tenzin Dorjee la. Describing the establishment of the Basic Education Policy by the Tibetan Parliament in Exile in 2004, and the setting up of Mewoen Tsuglag Peton School in 2005 to pilot BEP, as mentioned in section 14.2 of the policy, he outlined the overall efforts made by the Education Department to implement the BEP, focusing on teacher training provided from 2004 to 2009, curriculum development, and regional workshops to improve education quality, while prioritizing awareness among parents and in the community.

Furthermore, to address teacher attrition and travel challenges, the Education Department, in close coordination with Dr. Kelsang Wangdu la of Alinea International, has introduced region-based workshops, with four workshops conducted in the past 2.5 years, covering around 120 teachers. He then introduced the workshop agendas and concluded his remarks by thanking the participants.

Around thirty-three participants, including teachers and school heads from ten different TCV and STS schools, are attending the workshop. Additional Secretary Mr. Tenzin Dorjee, Head of Academic Section, DoE, and Dr. Kalsang Wangdu, Education Specialist cum Coordinator of Alinea International, are leading the workshop.

Over the course of the workshop, participants will be offered a series of focused sessions on foundational principles and philosophical backgrounds of BEP and NEP 2020, aims of education and their integration into classroom teaching, constructivism and student-centered classroom teaching, assessment strategies, language education, best practices of Early Childhood care and Education, teacher quality and competency, and continuous teacher professional development.
